Support for revamp of old garage into a new Eastney supermarket store

ALL CHANGE Where the new Tesco will be built in Eastney

RESIDENTS have voiced their support as a planning application for a new supermarket has been approved.

A former garage and car sales plot in Eastney Road, Eastney, is to be transformed into a new Tesco Express store.

The ground floor of the current three-storey building will be revamped to house the shop, and an extension of the building into the current car park will also be built.

The application was supported by some residents in the hope that another convenience store would lower food prices in the area.

Paul Kemp, of Gritanwood Road, Eastney, said: ‘I drive to Tesco in Havant to do my weekly shopping as you have to pay for parking in the Tesco in town.

‘Therefore a Tesco in the immediate area to where I live would be brilliant, and it would encourage others in the local area to do more shopping in the Milton Road and Eastney Road area.

‘It would be great for the Co-op to have a bit of competition as well as the stock can be limited and over priced.’

Other residents welcomed the prospect of more choice when shopping for groceries.

Christine Ware, also of Gritanwood Road, Eastney, said: ‘I have lived in Eastney for 37 years and there was always a choice of grocers shops up to a few years ago. Now there is only the Co-op which has the monopoly to charge high prices because there are no other local shops.

‘As I am a pensioner, it would be lovely to have another shop close by to have a better choice and not have to travel to supermarkets.’

The application was approved by Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee with a number of conditions relating to the size and appearance of the store.

Deliveries and servicing was also restricted to between the hours of 7am and 11pm, and deliveries can only be made by vehicles up to 8.4m long.

Eastney and Craneswater councillor Terry Hall, who opposed the application, said: ‘I am happy that restrictions have been put in place, but I don’t think they go far enough.

‘It’s too small a site for such a large store in my opinion, and the delivery lorries will create a lot of noise.

‘A lot of people think it will help drive down prices in the area, but I don’t think it will produce that.’

Great, another shop selling not very much at slightly inflated prices and causing traffic chaos.

Tesco express, where everything is priced at least 10p higher than their main stores!

Another Tesco is not what the area needs. In fact it's not what any area needs. As for prices coming down, I despair at the naive way that people view these things.

yet more pressure on the brilliant bransury park butchers and the local grocery store then! when these are gone and all you have left are these soulless mini supermarkets that draw up all that money and give nothing back tothe community, this decision wil be looked back with regret. There are already two co-op stores within 10 minuites of each other - both of them are poorly managed and over priced, but another tesco is really what we all need?

If I am right a small Sainsbury's is being built at present behind the frontage of that small arcade of local traders which has recently been vacated in Albert Road; the one on the left just beyond St. Ronan's Road. There are a couple of formal notices stuck to the glass headed 'Sainsbury's Supermarkets'. No problem for fairly sprightly Eastney or Milton pensioners with free bus passes. Come to think of it, it probably would not be to much bother for them to take a 17 or 18 bus to Edinburgh Road once a week with a small personal shopping trolley and do a light but cheaper shop at Tesco's in Crasswell Street.

Do any of the residence really think that food prices will become lower just because the local co-op has competition. There are several co-ops and tesco express in the area where I live and it hasn't change anything. Prices are just the same in co-op as they are in tesco express but for a couple of pence here and there. Prices haven't been driven down in fact if anything tesco has been putting the grocery prices up. What is need in Eastney area is another supermarket like Morrision, Asda of Sainsbury, not a convenient shop.

............I'm not a fan of Tesco, but I don't have a problem with them putting more of their "Express" style supermarkets on our streets . There are plenty of people , especially the elderly, who aren't able to drive to Asda or Sainsbury's to stock up every week. Many are forced to shop in "convenience " stores, where there's often very limited choice and prices tend to be high............. Having a decent local supermarket makes a big difference. It's easy to assume that it takes business from other local traders, but it encourages people to pop to the shops more frequently, which can only benefit the surrounding stores .If the Coop wasn't there, fewer people would bother to shop in the area.....As for Terry Hall worrying about noisy delivery trucks....(doesn't seem to be a problem at the Coop)... perhaps he would be better employed by trying to do something about the state of the Highland road shopping area, which has been allowed to decline so much in recent years.............

Shame it's not going to open back up as a petrol station. The butchers and green grocers are jewels in the crown of that area shopping wise, use them to ensure you don't loose thekm forever.

I have always found the express stores to be more expensive than the supermarkets because of the convenience factor. Do we really need another convenience store in Eastney Milton? Would rather see the likes of our excellent butcher, the green grocer, bakery and off licence in Milton Market flourish rather than line the pockets of the greedy share holders of Tesco. Doubt it'll be long before the White House follows in the same foot steps.

Paul Kemp may be expecting too much. Surely, a Tesco Express is small by definition and this one will probably be a similar size to the one opposite Fratton Park, which he does not mention. Agreed the Co-op is overpriced. Whether the ones opposite Ward Road and at Milton Market will be forced to drop their prices when this one is built remains to be seen. As a guide to Tesco's local pricing has anyone found higher prices for the same goods in the one opposite Fratton Park than in its big brother in Crasswell Street?

Tesco express are fast becoming the new Starbucks with a store every few hundred yards. There is already one opposite Frogmore road, as well as a Tesco down Albert road. Its the real bakers and butchers that are needed, not just more and more supermarkets.
