SUSPENDED councillors should forfeit their right to allowances, the leader of Gosport Borough Council has said.

Councillor Mark Hook had recently called on Cllr Dave Smith to give back the £5,220 he was paid while suspended for a year.

At a full council meeting this week, Cllr Hook said: ‘Councillors have the right to claim their allowance under the current rules.

‘However, you have to consider the moral obligations and duties as to whether you should receive allowances if you cannot undertake your duties. I agree they should forfeit them but it is down to the individual.’

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Smith said: ‘It is very distressing the way they are continually having a go at me. The adjudication panel suspended me for 12 months with my allowance.

‘If Mark Hook doesn’t like that he should go to the panel and ask them why they did that and stop blaming me.’
