Have your say

THE general election is nearly here – and now we are giving you the chance to quiz the candidates bidding to become your next MP.

The News will be holding pre-election hustings to allow our readers to ask questions of their prospective parliamentary candidates and discuss the topics most important to you.

Each of the main parties will be represented, giving you the chance to get a better idea of who you want to vote for on May 7.

The hustings are run in partnership with Portsmouth-based solicitors Coffin Mew and will be held throughout April.

Nick Gross, chairman and partner at Coffin Mew, said: ‘We are delighted to work with The News on these hustings and look forward to welcoming the prospective parliamentary candidates from the region’s political spectrum to explain their policies and to answer questions from business owners and members of the community.

‘The debate is likely to be lively and far-reaching – given the election is just under two months away.’

A candidate from each of the major parties for each constituency will be present at their respective event and will respond to questions from the audience on various topics as well as debate the issues with other candidates on the panel.

It will be a chance to gain a better understanding of each candidate’s views as the country prepares to vote in one of the most unpredictable general elections in decades.

Mark Waldron, editor of The News, will be chairing the panels.

He said: ‘We are very pleased that Coffin Mew are supporting our events this year and are really looking forward to getting all the candidates together and starting the debate.

‘Previous hustings have been a great success and with such an unpredictable election coming up this is a great opportunity for local residents to ask important questions on the big topics before going to the polls.

‘I encourage as many people as possible to come along and see what the candidates have to say.

‘This is a great opportunity for you to see the candidates bidding to represent you and your constituency, and their views on all the important subjects.’

Anyone interested in attending should e-mail Coffin Mew to confirm that they will be coming.
