THE Conservative Party has won a local by-election in Chichester.

Nick Thomas won the by-election for the Plaistow ward with 455 votes, just ahead of the Liberal Democrat Ray Cooper who had 408 votes.

Mr Thomas will represent the Plaistow Ward on Chichester District Council until May 2015, when the next local elections will take place.

The make-up of Chichester District Council is 37 Conservatives, eight Liberal Democrats and three Independents.

The by-election took place following the resignation of Ms L Westmore.
