A SPECIAL travel card for young people is to be axed.

West Sussex County Council said it is stopping its 3in1 bus travel card on December 31.

But the authority says financial help will still continue for low-income families.

The £50 travel card is for young people aged five to 19 and gives pupils savings on their bus fares.

But the council says only 6,000 students from a potential 116,000 use it – at a cost to the authority of £1.2m a year.

The council’s transport boss, Cllr John O’Brien, said: ‘This was a difficult decision to take but we are all living and working in one of the most financially-challenging times local government has ever known.’

He added financial aid will be available for families impacted by the move.
