Gosport’s Liberal Democrat leader today paid tribute to Charles Kennedy.

Peter Chegwyn said he was shocked to learn that the former party leader had been found dead at his home in Scotland aged 55.

Charles Kennedy was one of the very few politicians to be respected and admired across the political divide

Cllr Peter Chegwyn

He said: ‘I am shocked, stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic death of Charles Kennedy.

‘I was with Charles less than a month ago at his home in the Scottish Highlands. I spent the final week of the General Election campaigning with him in his parliamentary seat of Ross, Skye & Lochaber.

‘Charles was in superb form in the final week of the General Election campaign. Although he lost to the SNP the seat he had held for 32 years he still had so much in life to look forward to and was talking of playing an active role in the European Referendum to come.

‘Charles Kennedy was one of the very few politicians to be respected and admired across the political divide. He was a thoroughly decent, honourable and much loved man whose sudden death at the tragically early age of 55 will sadden many’ said Cllr Chegwyn, leader of the Lib Dem group on Gosport Borough Council
