RESIDENTS have the opportunity to buy a village store ahead of it going on the open market after it was deemed an asset of community value.

Winchester City Council received notice of the owner’s intention to sell Lower Upham Stores in Winchester Road last month.

The store was added to the district’s list of ‘assets of community value’ in April this year because the services it provides ‘further the social wellbeing’ of the community.

This means that under the Localism Act 2011, groups such as parish councils, charities and community interest companies have a chance to buy the store before it is sold on the open market.

A written expression of interest must be submitted to the council by November 3. For more call 01962 840222.
