PLANS for a Japanese restaurant in Chichester were refused by a council.

Wagamama, which has a unit at Gunwharf Quays, applied to convert clothes shop Store Twenty One, in South Street, into a restaurant.

But Chichester District Council said it could undermine ‘the vitality and viability of the city centre’. Council officials said retail space was needed.

A report added: ‘The proposal would result in the loss of a large retail unit, of which there are limited numbers within Chichester, with no evidence or marketing to demonstrate there is no demand for the unit in a retail use.’
