A MULTIMILLION-POUND scheme to reduce congestion at a busy roundabout is due to start next month.

Hampshire County Council has announced the £7.1m revamp of the Asda roundabout, between Purbrook Way and Hulbert Road, in Bedhampton, is planned to start on October 20.

Geoffrey Osborne Limited has been appointed as the contractor.

The first stage will be moving utility pipes off the carriageway, followed by the new road being laid from January.

Work will stop from early December this year until January so there is no disruption to businesses during one of the busiest times of the year. The work will finish by Christmas 2015.

The scheme will significantly increase the size of the junction, and add traffic lanes and traffic lights on the Purbrook Way approaches.

Councillor Sean Woodward, who is in charge of transport for the county council, said: ‘We have planned these works to minimise disruption, and the roundabout will remain open throughout the construction work in order to ensure business as usual in the area, particularly over the busy Christmas period.’
