Work on new community centre in Portchester gets under way

WORK has started to build a new community centre in Portchester.

The new £2m centre is on land immediately south of the old centre in Westlands Grove, which is currently in a state of disrepair.

A ceremony will take place tomorrow to officially mark the start of the building work.

The money for the centre was provided by Hampshire County Council on the condition that it includes a children’s centre.

Councillor Seán Woodward, leader of Fareham Borough Council, will be joined by the leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, as they dig the first soil.

Cllr Woodward said: ‘I’m delighted to be breaking the ground on this exciting new Portchester Community Centre.

‘The centre will be a fantastic facility for the people of Portchester.

‘The building will include a new children’s centre, provision for a pre-school, a large multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms and a kitchen.’

Cllr Thornber, added: ‘This £2m project, initially funded by the county council, is an exciting project for Portchester and will provide residents with a wonderful new, modern facility that better meets the needs of the community.

‘The provision of a children’s centre is an important part of this project.

‘The centre will provide families with easy access to advice and a range of different support services, to help give children the best possible start in life.’
