FOOTBALL fans can get involved with Blue Day by buying their team’s shirt, as Pompey vow to donate some of the profit from their sales to the cause.
The club is supporting our charity bonanza which will be held on May 6 – the day before Pompey’s last game of the season away to Scunthorpe – and hopes its fans, young and old, will do the same.
It will donate £2 from every home shirt sold from April 1 to May 2 to the Tom Prince Cancer Trust – a local charity set up in memory of the avid Pompey fan.
David Lampitt, Pompey’s chief executive, said: ‘The Tom Prince Cancer Trust has long been a charity that is close to the club’s heart and we are delighted to be involved with Blue Day again.
‘It’s wonderful to see the whole community come together for such a worthy cause.
‘I have been told past Blue Days have raised a considerable amount of money and I am sure this year we will all be working hard to ensure this one is the most successful yet.’
The trust has now received the £12,500 pledged by Pompey fans through shirt and ticket sales which was frozen after 2009’s Blue Day when the club went into administration – and it is keen to stress this will not happen again.
A spokesman for Portsmouth FC said: ‘We’re thrilled to be able to help in this way. We hope to raise a significant amount through the promotion and all monies raised will be forwarded to the Tom Prince Cancer Trust without delay.’
Pompey also donated 10 signed Blue Day T-shirts to the trust for auction, and will wear the charity’s T-shirts in their warm-up on the last home game of the season – now to be held on bank holiday Monday, May 2.
This is the fifth Blue Day and, as always, all proceeds go to the trust, run by the family of the teenager who died of bone cancer, osteosarcoma, at his Southsea home in 2004.
His mum Adele, dad Clinton and sister Emma hope this year’s Blue Day will raise £25,000 for the organisation which will be used to fund research into the disease.
Since setting up the charity shortly after Tom’s death, the family have generated an outstanding £580,000, and £150,000 of that was raised by the four Blue Days alone.
