THE tip at Port Solent is closed until further notice following the sudden downpour earlier today.

The heavy rain left the road into Portsmouth’s recycling centre impassable with up to nearly two foot of water for much of its length.

Staff from the tip, which is run Portsmouth City Council, were left standing at the roundabout by the entrance to turn vehicles away as they arrived to drop off their rubbish.

During the closure they were redirecting members of the public to the recycling site at Havant.

There were several vehicles owned by members of the public using the tip when the downpour began at about 11.30am, who were told they could wait until the rain stopped, but they were all able to make it out safely.

Staff from the city’s sub-contractors Hopkins Recycling remained on site throughout the closure, which lasted until about 2.30pm.

Despite further showers, enough water had drained off by mid-afternoon to enable the depot to reopen safely.

The tip is expected to operate again in its normal summer hours tomorrow which are from 8am to 7pm.
