Hundreds of followers from all over the world are keeping tabs on police 'tweets'.

Officers from Portsmouth's city centre unit were the first in Hampshire Constabulary to set up a page on social networking site Twitter.

And since starting their updates almost a year ago they have attracted 417 followers from all over the world, including the USA, India and Australia.

Officers 'tweet' about local crime issues, stories that have appeared in The News, arrests and charges in the Portsmouth city centre area - all in 140 characters or less.

The pilot, set up by former city centre unit sergeant Rob Sutton, is also is also being tried out by officers from Portchester Safer Neighbourhoods Team who set up a page of their own to keep residents up-to -date on local issues affecting them.
