FIREFIGHTERS helped dancers in their bid to perform in Europe by grabbing a sponge at a fundraising car wash.

The event in B&Q’s car park, Fratton, was held in aid of street dance group 2nd 2 Nun and the Firefighters Charity.

The young dance troop – ranked fourth in the UK – came up with the idea as part of their project to raise enough cash to send them to a European competition.

Having impressed the judges at the IDO European Hip Hop, Electric Boogie and Breakdance Championships’ national heats, the crew qualified for the finals in Denmark.

Through tireless fundraising, they have generated around £5,000, but still need more than £1,000 before their departure on June 30.

Gareth Smith, 34, of Cuthbert Road, Fratton, who runs the group, said: ‘It’s getting exciting now because it’s so close, and everyone is really looking forward to it.

‘We have no idea what to expect but it should be great fun.’
