A PENSIONER from Portsmouth has died after his car was in collision with a trailer being pulled by a tractor.

The 70-year-old man was driving a red Alfa Romeo along Street End Road, Sidlesham, near Chichester, when the crash happened.

His car was in collision with the trailer of a tractor, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The tractor was carrying bales of straw which fell on to the car.

The trailer overturned in the collision.

The incident happened at about 7.10am yesterday and the driver of the tractor, a 25-year-old man from Chichester, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or dangerous driving.

Sargeant Carl Knapp, from Sussex police, said: ‘Sadly, the 70-year-old man from Portsmouth, who was the only occupant of the car, has died following the collision.

‘The driver of the tractor, a 25-year-old man from Chichester, has been arrested on suspicion of death by careless or dangerous driving.’

The pensioner has not yet been named by police.

The road was closed for several hours while crash investigators examined the scene.

Two other cars were involved but no-one else was injured.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact police on 101, quoting Op Dovecot.
