AN INDEPENDENT cinema is holding a red carpet event with an Oscar-themed screening of Les Miserables featuring live song performances.

Opera singer Simon Long, of Waterlooville, will be performing several songs from the film – which saw many people from Portsmouth cast as extras and was in part filmed in the Historic Dockyard – along with five of his students.

The event will take place at recently reopened No 6 cinema in the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth on Saturday, February 23. As it is the night before the Oscars, the red carpet will be rolled out in honour of the film and the French flag will be flying. Those who are attending are invited to dress smartly and enjoy the atmosphere of a glamorous evening.

Doors open at 6.15pm allowing time to enjoy the wine and canapes on offer, and to hear Simon and his students sing. The film will be shown at 7.30pm.

Siri Finess of No 6 said: ‘They will sing while people are enjoying the wine and canapes, and they will also sing people in and out of the auditorium.

‘If you haven’t heard Simon sing before, he is excellent.’

Simon, who is employed by the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust as an IT worker, passed his teaching diploma in June of last year and teaches at the Classique school of dance in Waterlooville.

He has also been training with an opera singer in Italy.

‘I teach a few students privately,’ Simon said.

‘I thought we could do the key Les Miserables songs.

‘I thought instead of just me singing the songs I could get the right voices for the right songs, which is great for the event. It’s great to show off the students who are keen to perform, and let people see how they are getting on.’

Simon will be singing Bring Him Home and Empty Chairs.

The students singing will be Roger Rixon with Master of the House, Megan Wilson with Castle on a Cloud and Meena Mews with On my Own. Simon is also working on a medley of songs to perform at the event.

In addition to the performances, the cinema will be hosting an Oscar-themed quiz.

Tickets cost £10 and include the canapes and wine on offer.
