Portsmouth’s community heroes are honoured

SPECIAL awards will be given to five local people for their outstanding contributions to the area’s community.

Their efforts and dedication to the city will be recognised tomorrow at a civic event organised by Portsmouth City Council.

The new Lord Mayor will present Portsmouth Civic Awards to the five recipients – who were all nominated by city councillors – at the annual mayor-making ceremony in Guildhall.

Michael Mellows, who founded the Faith and Football charity, will pick up an award for his hard work, alongside Anna Potten, founder of Dot to Dot participatory arts organisation.

Ian Parmiter will also collect an award for his contribution to the local community and charity work, as will Cyril Trickett for his services to local football and Thelma Turner-Hill for her work with carers of people with mental illness.

Cllr Cheryl Buggy will present the awards as one of her first duties as the new Lord Mayor.

Outgoing Lord Mayor Paula Riches said: ‘So many people in Portsmouth dedicate time to making the city a better place. These awards are a chance to say thank you to some of them and recognise their achievements.

‘Some of them are in the public eye but others make an equally important contribution behind the scenes and this ceremony helps to show that the council really appreciates all their efforts.’

All five will receive a badge and certificate.
