THOUSANDS of people are being invited to take part in a world record attempt led by the one and only Chesney Hawkes.
The New Theatre Royal in Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth, needs 2,500 people to take part in an air guitar world record attempt.
The theatre has organised the event to raise money for the remaining work that needs to be completed on its interior. They still need to raise £350,000.
Campaign director of the theatre Fiona Wilson is calling on people in Portsmouth to join in with the fun.
She said: ‘A couple of years ago we tried to break the world record attempt of the most people doing air guitar at once.
‘But due to torrential rain, we had to change venue and we couldn’t get as many people.
‘So, this year, we want to have a good chance at beating it so we need people from Portsmouth to come to Fratton Park and take their place.’
Nineties pop idol Chesney Hawkes – famous for hit song The One and Only – will lead the attempt.
The theatre is also looking to break another world record and has organised a gig in which 64 comedians will do stand-up for more than 80 hours.
The comedy gig starts at 1pm on March 15 and will end the following Tuesday between 11pm and midnight.
Fiona added: ‘The stand-up gig world record is going to be great and we have managed to get more than 60 acts who have different themes and styles.
‘They will be performing non-stop throughout the night and it really is a massive feat. Both the records are held in America and we want to bring them to Portsmouth. They are fun and different and should be great to see.’
The two world record attempts are being held at Fratton Park, on March 15. The air guitar attempt will start at 11am.
Money raised for the air guitar will be split between Sport Relief, the theatre and the football club.
A comedy double-header has also been arranged with Lee Nelson and Joe Wilkinson performing at Portsmouth Guildhall on March 23.
