A web developer from Portsmouth has launched a virtual version of a buy-a-brick scheme to help buy a new pitch for a football team in Greece.

Claire Haas has set up a football pixel pitch to raise money for Olympos Football Club from Corfu.

The club does not have the financial means to replace their turf. So after hearing about the club’s struggle, Ms Haas started a virtual campaign.

She said: ‘The football pixel pitch has never been done before so this is a first not just for Greece but for the whole world.’

Manager of Olympos Football Club, Spiros Merianos, said: ‘We have never heard of anything like this before, it is a great opportunity for us.

‘We are very grateful for Claire’s gesture and innovative idea and we thank everyone that has so far shown their support for the future of our club and football opportunities on Corfu.’

Users can buy a part of the pitch for €0.12 at footballpixelpitch.com and pay using Paypal.
