TWO years ago, he was undergoing surgery following a brain haemorrhage.

But now, Pete Plowman is looking to give something back to the doctors and nurses who saved his life – and he’ll start with a fundraising boost from pal Paul Heaton, formally of chart-toppers The Beautiful South.

Pete will ride 900 miles for the Smile4Wessex charity, travelling from John O’Groats in Scotland down to Land’s End in Cornwall.

Pete’s was given a £500 boost, with his first donation from Paul.

‘I have got to know Paul over the past few years, having always followed his music career, and have met him a few times at music gigs during the last two years,’ he said.

‘When I was recovering from my haemorrhage he was very supportive.

‘He is a keen cyclist and probably one of the reasons I took to cycling.

‘He values my support over the years and wanted to repay that support when I told him of my plans.’

Pete, 45 from Jervis Road, Stamshaw, suffered a brain haemorrhage two years ago, minutes after arriving home from a weekend away.

He was treated at the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton general hospital.

‘It all came out of the blue,’ he said.

‘We had been driving home and it struck about midnight – there was a very narrow window of opportunity to operate.

‘It was tough laying in bed going from day to day, not knowing when it will all end.

‘I was very well cared for and now having fully recovered. I’m taking on this challenge to try and repay the skills of the doctors and wonderful care that I received there. I wanted to raise some money for the charity and thought there would be no bigger challenge than this.’

The ride will take place in July, covering an average of 70 miles per day.
