ALMOST 50,000 homes suffered a brief blackout last night after a fault in an electricity supply station.

The power cut affected homes in Cosham, Drayton, Hilsea, North End and Buckland.

It lasted for around ten minutes before emergency supplies kicked in.

A spokesman for Southern Electric said: ‘There was a brief interruption to the supply.

‘However our emergency procedures came into operation and we were able to restore the supplies in 10 minutes.

‘Our priority is always to minimise disruption.’

The power company will now carry out an investigation to discover what caused the power cut.

It is thought the problem was caused by a fault at the electricity substation in Hilsea.
