WORSHIPPERS from two parishes came together to see their new priest being licensed to serve them.

Parishioners packed St Thomas the Apostle church in Elson Lane, Elson, Gosport on Saturday to witness the licensing and the start of the Rev Karen Mitchell’s time in Gosport.

The Rev Mitchell is now priest-in-charge at the Church of England churches, St Thomas and St Matthew’s Church in Wych Lane, Bridgemary.

She will now also serve as chaplain at Bridgemary School, Wych Lane.

The service was led by the Bishop of Portsmouth, the Rt Rev Christopher Foster, with representatives of Gosport Borough Council, community groups and other churches present.

Members from all Church of England parishes in Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent attended.

After the service a reception was held in St Thomas’s Church Hall and a joint service was held at St Matthew’s on Sunday.

The Rev Mitchell was formerly a priest in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.
