A prison hopes to build links with the community thanks to a new visitors' centre.

The former staff social club at HMP Kingston in Milton Road, Milton - which houses lifers - has been refurbished and is now open to the public.

The new facility at Austin House has been repainted, completely rewired and the floor has been replaced since its closure in October last year. There is also a kitchen, new furniture and a children's play area and creche are to be created.

The centre is open to friends and relatives visiting prisoners. However is also available free of charge to local community groups. Lord Mayor of Portsmouth councillor Paula Riches officially opened the centre. She said: 'I'm so pleased that this is going to be a centre for the community. So many community groups say they have got nowhere to go - now they have somewhere.'
