A COMMUTER had a welcome addition to her trip to work when she received a prize for being the 100,000th passenger to use Portsmouth’s park-and-ride.

Sam Pennington, from Gosport, was making her usual commute to work as a supervisor at jeweller H Samuel in Commercial Road when she was awarded a month-long pass for the park-and-ride for being the landmark customer.

The 25-year-old has been a regular user of the service for three months and was surprised when told the good news.

Sam said: ‘I’ve never won anything before, I was really surprised.

‘Parking in Portsmouth is difficult and park-and-ride is an easy cheaper option.

‘It drops me off right in town and the buses are frequent.’

The park-and-ride on the M275 has grown in popularity since launching in April.

It has buses every 12 minutes at peak times.

The summer holidays have proven particularly popular with extra buses being used to meet demand.

More than 9,000 people used the service last week – the biggest number in a week since it launched – with 1,709 passengers on Saturday marking the record for one day. The service is open seven days a week.

Cllr Ken Ellcome, said: ‘We will continue to improve what is on offer to make sure it serves visitors to Portsmouth as best as it possibly can, including future options to extend to Southsea.’
