A WORKING smoke alarm prevented a potentially serious blaze at a high-rise block of flats.

Neighbours dailled 999 after hearing the alarm on the sixth floor of the tower block in South Street, Gosport.

Fire engines were called out at about 2.30pm today and quickly put out the blaze, which was started by a burning pan on the stove.
