PEOPLE who set up a petition asking for extra rubbish to be collected during the festive period are happy a council has agreed.
Residents in Gosport signed the petition after being told that extra bags would not be collected along with the refuse in their wheelie bins.
But Gosport Borough Council has now said the extra rubbish will be collected for the first two collections following Christmas.
Jodie-Louise Fisher, of Lee-on-the-Solent, set up the petition earlier this month.
She said she was relieved at the council’s decision.
‘It is great news to hear they will be collecting extra rubbish,’ said the 25-year-old.
‘I remember last year standing in my bin trying to get all the rubbish inside.
‘So it is good news that extra rubbish from both the general household and the recycling bins will be collected.’
The petition was started by Jodie-Louise after people started discussing the issue on Facebook. She added: ‘People were talking about the problem but no-one was doing anything about it. So I decided to start the petition.
‘I felt something needed to be done for those people who couldn’t take extra rubbish to the tip because they are elderly or disabled or don’t drive. I got nearly 100 signatures in about 24 hours which showed the level of concern.’
A spokeswoman for the council said: ‘We’re aware that additional rubbish is always generated during the Christmas period.
‘The council is, for the first two collections following Christmas only, collecting and disposing of additional refuse left by the side of bins.
‘However it is important that you put any excess normal household waste in black sacks only and leave these next to your black domestic bin when you place this out for collection.
‘Recycling materials should be in any sack other than black or in a cardboard box next to your recycling bin.’
Rubbish collections in Gosport that fall on New Year’s Day or Friday, January 2 will be one day later than normal.
People are reminded to place bins out for collection by 7am as usual.
