EMERGENCY gas work started this week after a leak was reported in Gosport.

A member of the public called Southern Gas Networks complaining of a smell near Privett Road and Privett Place in Privett, Gosport, on Saturday at about 10am.

After an initial assessment the firm excavated the road and found the source of the leak.

Three-way temporary traffic lights were put up at the junction of Privett Road and Privett Place after the firm met county council staff on Tuesday.

After repairs have been completed the firm will then begin to reinstate the road.

Claire Buchanan, a spokeswoman for Southern Gas Networks, said: ‘We attended following a report to the National Gas Emergency number.

‘Temporary traffic lights will be in place while we make the repairs.

‘We are doing everything we can to make these repairs as quickly as possible and reopen the road fully to road users.’

The member of the public had called the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999, after smelling the gas.
