Gosport sailor Alex Thomson is celebrating the fact that his newborn son has been discharged from hospital.

Alex was due to fly out on Monday to the Cape Verde Islands to rejoin the Barcelona World Race.

But he decided against taking part after his son Oscar was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, a heart defect.

Yesterday, Alex and his partner Kate were told they could at last take baby Oscar home from Southampton General Hospital.

He said: 'It will be nice just to go back to some sort of normality for both Kate and me. We're both looking forward to getting him home.

'We knew they were going to let us go as soon as he was feeding properly but we have to come back in a week's time for more tests.'

Alex said he was 'extremely disappointed' not to be able to re-join his boat, Hugo Boss, in the Barcelona World Race. He failed to make the start of the race after having his appendix out, but planned to take part once declared medically fit.
