Sailor Alex holds new baby with poorly heart

A refugee in South Sudan

A country ravaged by years of bitter civil war and conflict

Gosport sailor Alex Thomson has postponed a race after being told his new baby is suffering from a heart condition.

Only last week Alex was celebrating the birth of his son, Oscar, with his partner Kate Denham.

He was due to fly out yesterday to the Cape Verde Islands to rejoin his boat, HUGO BOSS, for a race.

But he has postponed flying out after he was given the news on little Oscar.

Writing on Twitter, Alex said, 'Our beautiful little boy Oscar has been diagnosed with a heart condition. More tests will be done later this week. I am staying with him.'

In a later post Alex added: 'We are in Soton General and are receiving outstanding care.

'Thanks so much for all the support @Katedenham and I really appreciate it x'

Alex failed to make the start of the Barcelona World Race after having his appendix out.

He had to be declared medically fit, before re-joining the race.
