Sailors raise over £20,000 to help hospice

ALL records were smashed when more than £20,000 was raised for a hospice after a spectacular day of sailing on Chichester Harbour.

The 11th St Wilfrid’s Hospice ‘Nab’ Challenge saw a record number of entrants.

Organised by the Inn-Shore Cruising Club, East Wittering, and sponsored by Chichester-based boiler distributor, ATAG Heating UK, the ‘Nab’ Challenge took place over a 12 nautical mile course from a start line just outside Chichester Harbour, around the Nab Tower and back.

It attracted entrants from sailing clubs across the area.

Overall winner with the highest points total was Alan Stannah on his boat, Sally of Kames.

The ATAG trophy for the boat that raised the most money was won by Derrick Pope, who raised £3,200 through sponsorship of his yacht Valkyrie.

Meanwhile, the Tempest Fugit Trophy for the club that raised the most money went to Itchenor Sailing Club, which raised £7,180 for the hospice in Chichester.

Since the fundraiser started, almost £150,000 has been donated to the worthy cause.

Mark Taylor, from Inn-Shore Cruising Club, said: ‘Once again, we have set the bar high. And in this year of high sporting achievements we have risen to the challenge and raised a fantastic amount of money for St Wilfrid’s.’
