TWO satellites part-built in Portsmouth have been launched in French Guiana.

For the 61st consecutive time, Ariane 5 successfully launched from Kourou carrying two satellites.

The satellite launcher was developed and built by Portsmouth-based contractor Airbus Defence and Space.

The firm also built the satellites, including the payloads, which were manufactured in the city. The payload is the brains of the satellite.

It handles the signals sent from the ground, cleans them, processes them, and then amplifies them one billion times, before broadcasting them back to Earth for receipt by satellite dishes.
