STANDING untroubled against a backdrop of farmland, woodland and the rolling South Downs, St Hubert’s is a church that demands recognition.
The church was built in the 9th century to serve a Saxon settlement and when the Manor of Idsworth was created in 1102 it was used as a family chapel.
Nowadays it stands at the gateway to the South Downs National Park and is photographed by walkers, gazed at from passing train windows and admired from all angles in all seasons.
Yet the church is in urgent need of repair and in summer 2016 a charity, The Friends of the Church of St Hubert’s Idsworth Trust was established.
The trustees have lost no time in setting about raising money to help repair the church that has stood so beautifully for a thousand years and awed onlookers from all parts of the world.
The momentum of the charity is growing.
It seems people from across Britain and farther afield, recognise the beauty of the church in its hillside setting and see it as a charming record of our Saxon past to be treasured.
The Friends have put together an Evening of Harmony at the church on Saturday, November 12 to welcome new friends and encourage further donations.
The response has been fantastic with all tickets taken.
The Trustees are most grateful to the Cantores Episcopi of Winchester College and the Free Radicals of Petersfield who will be performing and to all those who have donated both time and funds to enable the event to go ahead.
However, despite generous donations, the future still remains uncertain for the little church in the field.
Much help is required to safeguard this beautiful building for future generations.
The public are invited to join The Friends to preserve its past and support its future.
