A SCHOOLBOY has been airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a car.

The boy, believed to be around six, was crossing Gregson Avenue, Gosport, when the accident happened, just after 8.30am.

The road was closed between Wych Lane and Nobes Avenue while paramedics treated the boy.

He was then airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The accident caused long tailbacks along the busy road, which lead to jams in nearby Wych Lane.

Diversions were in place until the road reopened at 10.15am.

Police say the driver of the Skoda Fabia was not arrested.
