A CHILDREN’S entertainer has received the top award at a magic convention.
Scott Thatcher, known as Silly Scott, was given the British Children’s Entertainer National Championships Award 2014 at the Blackpool Magic Convention.
Up against five other top magicians, Scott had to show his best tricks in a 15-minute time limit and impress the judges.
But his audience also consisted of hundreds of local children and 5,000 magicians who attended the four-day event at the Blackpool Winter Gardens.
Scott, from Hilsea, was judged on his showmanship, originality and skill, magical content and entertainment value. And the 39-year-old was over the moon at coming out on top.
He said: ‘It was a real honour to be chosen to take part this year.
‘But it was also a great achievement as everyone was saying this year was the toughest competition they had seen in about 15 years. Each act was extremely talented and at the top of their game.
‘Finding out that I had won the award and being presented it during the Saturday evening gala show in the famous Blackpool Opera House Theatre in front of 5,000 other magicians was definitely one of highlights of my career.’
Although he has attended the Blackpool Magic Convention before, this year was the first time Scott had been asked to take part in the competitions.
He added: ‘You only get to perform at the convention if you are recommended.
‘There are six acts that take part in the competition.
‘This is exclusively invite-only with the selection of only the best entertainers from round the county who are chosen to take part.
‘So it really was an honour.’
So far, 2014 has been a busy year for Scott who went to California to take part in the KIDabra conference. The convention is the biggest children’s entertainment conference in the UK.
Scott said: ‘It really has been a fantastic start to the year for me.
‘I love my job so much and can’t wait to show everyone my award-winning act at birthday parties and in the summer holiday at free events at Port Solent, Finkley Down Farm and Birdworld.’
As well as receiving the award, Scott met famous street magician Dynamo and television’s Penn and Teller Fool Us star, John Archer.
