A COASTGUARD search was launched last night after reports of a man threatening to harm himself.

Both lifeboats from Hayling RNLI joined the coastguard for a search along the shoreline at Hayling Island.

There was a report from two local anglers that a distressed man was seen walking west along the beach towards the funfair.

The search launched at about 5.30pm, but all search parties stood down at 8pm because the man could not be found after several sweeps along the beach.

‘The search moved inland,’ said a spokesman for the coastguard.

‘It’s an ongoing police inquiry.’
