FLAMES engulfed a derelict American landing craft when it caught fire while being cut apart for scrap.

The 15m by 5m vehicle was one of two parked at the former Harry Pounds’ scrapyard in Tipner.

Watch manager Mark Norton of Cosham Fire Station said they were called to the fire about 10.30am today. Two fire engines and a Land Rover from Havant were at the scene. A team of 10 firefighters used a hose and a Delta Prima foam-making appliance to put the blaze out.

Mr Norton said the fire started due to cutting equipment while the vehicle was being cut apart for scrap.
