HORRIFIED residents have told of their shock after a man was found dead in a house in what police are calling suspicious circumstances.
Police rushed to Waverley Road, in Southsea, Portsmouth, at 12.35am yesterday to a report of a dead man.
Plain-clothed detectives were last night still quizzing neighbours following the discovery.
Uniformed officers with gloves scoured the streets, with residents saying they had searched through bins.
Those who said they knew the dead man, whose identity has not been released by police, have paid tribute.
‘He was a lovely guy, absolutely harmless,’ said a 54-year-old man who did not want to be named.

The man added: ‘He was just staying there.
‘I got up this morning and saw all the police vans.
‘I’m shocked, I’m really shocked.
‘You never think it’s going to be someone you know and that close to your house.’
The road, a busy route in Southsea, was a hive of activity with multiple police cars and vans outside the home.
Yesterday a Hampshire police spokeswoman said detectives in the major crime team based at Fratton station had launched a probe.
Portsmouth City Council lists the mid-terrace home where the man was found as a house of multiple occupancy, with many of the surrounding homes also listed as such.
It is just a short walk away from where a 36-year-old man was stabbed in the face in November outside Laundry Land in Albert Road. Police have not said they are linked.
Kristina Demjanova, 36, of Francis Avenue, Southsea, was walking near the house, across from the All Seasons guest house, yesterday.
She said: ‘It’s scary. It makes you think it’s not really a safe place to live.’
A 25-year-old nearby resident said: ‘Police are going through our bins looking for something.’
A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: ‘Police were called to an address in Waverley Road, Southsea, at 12.35am after a man’s body was discovered.
‘The man’s death is being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing.’
Anyone with information should call the major crime team at Fratton on 101 quoting Operation Turtle.
