SHOPPERS were evacuated after a blaze started at the back of a shopping precinct.

Firefighters from Portchester and Southsea fire stations were called to tackle the blaze at Portchester Precinct at 2.50pm today.

It was only going for a few minutes but it certainly increased the drama for the day.

The fire had started in a stairwell of a flat above Lloyds Bank.

Shopkeepers evacuated their premises because of the smoke and the cash dispensers were closed down outside the bank. Eight flats were also evacuated.

Kevin Butcher, from Portchester Traders’ Association, said: ‘From what I can make out there was a fire at the back of Lloyds in the stairwell, some rubbish had caught light.

‘A fire van came up pretty quick with a crew and it was only going for a few minutes but it certainly increased the drama for the day.’

Firefighters from Fareham were also called to deal with rubbish on fire in a skip today.

The crew went to Palmerston Business Park, in Palmerston Drive, Fareham at 9am and put the fire out by 9.45am.
