LEGENDARY sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said he was enormously proud to carry the Olympic Torch around the newly-restored Cutty Sark.

The veteran sailor, who was the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world, was chosen to carry the flame through Greenwich on Saturday.

Sir Robin is the founder of Gosport-based Clipper Ventures.

He said:‘Running with the Olympic Torch was phenomenal.

‘There were such huge crowds and it was a wonderful atmosphere.

‘I’m so pleased to have been part of it.’

Sir Robin is a trustee of the Cutty Sark Preservation Society.

The historic clipper was destroyed by a fire five years ago but has now undergone a £50m restoration and is back open to the public.
