Bins are kept in the basement, which is where the fire took hold.

Two retained crews – one from Waterlooville and the other from Wickham – were sent to tackle the fire as Fareham firefighers are out on strike as part of a nationwide protest over proposed pension changes.

Four firefighters with breathing apparatus kit fought the fire with two jets and one hose reel.

South Central Ambulance Service sent one crew and treated a man at the scene for smoke inhilation. He did not need hospital treatment.

The fire service were on scene until 4pm.
