A CAMPAIGN to help smokers give up their vice has enrolled some of the country’s top comedians.

Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge by Public Health England, is encouraging smokers in Portsmouth to swap their fags for gags, to help them quit for good.

Top comedians including Paddy McGuinness, Al Murray, Simon Brodkin and Andi Osho will this year bring a touch of the British sense of humour to help quitters through the challenge.

Two-thirds of smokers say they want to quit but only four in ten told a recent survey that they have tried in the last year.

Doctor Janet Maxwell, director of public health at Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘Campaigns like Stoptober are a fantastic way of encouraging residents to quit smoking.

‘We have an estimated 37,000 smokers in Portsmouth, so
it is quite a big issue for our city.

‘I am confident that stop smoking campaigns will continue to reduce this number by offering support to smokers who want to quit.’
