THE Mountbatten Centre will host a softball tournament to raise cash in memory of Tom Prince.
Solent Softball League is playing a series of indoor matches to raise money for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.
Tom Prince was a Southsea boy who died of osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in 2004. The trust was set up by family and friends to keep Tom’s memory alive and to do something in his name.
‘A lot of us still remember Tom as a young boy, running around and collecting balls for us.’ said Andy Burgess, event organiser for Solent Softball League.
Since 2004 the Solent Softball League has opened its season with a charity tournament in memory of Tom who used to play for the Baffins Homers softball team.
The Tom Prince Cancer Trust is also the focus of the annual Blue Day events organised by The News.
‘We think of the cancer trust as a family rather than a charity. There’s a connection between the league and Tom’s family because it’s very much a family sport,’ said Andy.
Since 2004 the Solent Softball League has raised more than £17,000 for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust, which is aiming to eventually raise £1m to fund research into osteosarcoma.
The charity tournament takes place on March 24 and spectators are welcome.
