IT REALLY has been a summer of fun.

And with schools opening again next week, summer activities are drawing to a close.

But the Blue Reef Aquarium, on Clarence Esplanade, is still hosting its summer events and they have been getting more and more popular during the holidays.

From learning about rock pool creatures to seeing the sharks get fed, there has been something for everyone.

Jenna MacFarlane, visitor service supervisor at Blue Reef Aquarium, said the summer activities went really well.

She said: ‘Everyone has had a great time during the summer, from staff to our visitors.

‘We host our summer activities every year but we try to do different things.

‘Some of the favourites, like the rock pool encounters, we do annually but our beach club fun and games was new for this year.

‘The families really enjoyed that, especially when it was sunny and we started off playing with the kids for about half an hour but that has steadily grown to an hour and a half.

‘The staff build sand castles with them and just generally have fun in the sunshine.

‘The rock pool encounters are always a favourite and most of the kids were brave enough to have felt them.

‘They enjoy seeing them up close because it’s not something they do often.’

The aquarium also has extra feeds in the shark and stingray exhibits.

Jenna added: ‘Everyone loves seeing the sharks being fed so having extra sessions is always a favourite.

‘But we tend to be quite busy throughout the summer, rain or shine, and most of the time, we are busier on the rainy days because we’re mostly inside.

‘But a combination of the beach club and the games have really made us popular this year.’
