By the Rev Dr Ian Meredith, Vicar of St Mary’s Church, Portchester

So imagine my delight when St Mary’s Lambs, our church toddler group, decided to base their entry in the Portchester Gala on the popular story.

St Mary’s Lambs members never fail to amaze me with their generosity of time and donations and the Gala was another example of this

Rev Dr Ian Meredith

Together they transformed an 18ft trailer into Captain Hook’s pirate ship and made decorations for the float. It was fantastic.

And the children, along with some of the grown-ups, dressed as characters including Peter Pan and Wendy.

And our group leader Claire MacCormack dressed as Captain Hook.

The project involved everyone – children, parents, grandparents and staff – working really hard together.

It was a wonderful experience of everybody contributing, teamworking, volunteering and giving, however big or small, to create something amazing.

They had such fun parading in the Portchester Gala and we were all so thrilled when they were awarded first prize.

This is now the second year running that we have been successful and our attempt this year was outstanding.

The group meets every Wednesday from 10.30am-12pm during term time and they have lots of fun and also do a lot to help others.

Last October, they temporarily transformed the church into a miniature obstacle course for the under- 5s and the children were sponsored for the number of laps of the course that they could complete. They had lots of fun taking part and they raised a total of £300, which is fantastic.

So far this year the group has donated around £100 to charities as well as made several large donations to the Fareham Food bank.

St Mary’s Lambs members never fail to amaze me with their generosity of time and donations and the Gala was another example of this.

This month, seven of our Lambs are leaving for primary school and at our last meeting we had a mini- graduation ceremony for them to say goodbye.

We are always happy to welcome new members. If you’d like to find out more about what we do please come along. We start again on September 9. It would be great to see you.
