FIREFIGHTERS were called after steam was spotted coming from a lorry trailer containing rubbish headed for France.

The incident at Portsmouth International Port happened at 4am on Saturday.

When a crew from Southsea arrived they realised there wasn’t a fire and heat had been generated as a result of the rubbish decomposing and being packed together for so long.

The lorry was headed overseas so the rubbish could go to an incinerator. It was advised that the port kept an eye on the trailer before it boarded a boat.
