A STUDENT is hoping to secure a highly unusual ambassadorial role when he graduates in the summer.

Josh Mitchell, from Hayling Island, has been shortlisted for the role of Ambassador of Meerkova – the fictional village ruled by Compare the Market’s meerkat Aleksandr Orlov.

The Cardiff University student is one of six people vying for the £40,000, six-month contract, to represent the insurance comparison website at festivals and major events across the country this summer, including Glastonbury and Wimbledon.

Josh, 22, grew up in Portsmouth and was a pupil at St John’s College, Southsea.

His parents now live on Seafront, Hayling.

In a bid to trounce the competition he has the put together a series of videos and campaigns to get the job.

He said: ‘My mum was the one who originally saw the job advertised in The Sunday Times and rang me straight away.

‘She thought it’d be perfect for me. Around 3,000 people applied for the job and I’m down to the final six.

‘My campaign has been very tongue in cheek, while others have gone for the sympathy vote.

‘I’ve even done a hip-hop rap video.’

It all comes down to a public vote which ends on Sunday.
