A £400,000 makeover has put the wow factor back into an ancient church.
More than 10 years of fundraising have finally paid off at St Mary’s Church, Church Road, Hayling Island.
The 750-year-old building has been transformed from a cold, dark place of worship, to a stunning warm and bright place of celebration.
There is a new organ, underfloor heating for cold winter services, a new Purbeck stone floor, a new lighting system and a top of the range PA system.
The Rev Paul Ginever, said: ‘I have never known something to cause so many people to stand back and say “wow”. We are so pleased.’
Mr Ginevar would like the venue to be used by the community for events such as concerts and theatre shows,
The church will be rededicated by the Bishop of Portsmouth, Christopher Foster, on Sunday, March 27 at the 10.30am service.
There will be a wedding fayre on Saturday, February 19 from 10.30am to 4pm with a diverse range of exhibitors. All money raised will go towards the building fund. Entrance is £2.50 and visitors can park at Hayling College, opposite the church.
