BISHOP’S Waltham has become the first market town to take part in a study about the sales of food ahead of a superstore being built in the town.

Last year, permission was given for Sainsbury’s to build a supermarket in the town.

The study, supported by the Campaign to Protect Rural England, will look at how people market, produce and sell food in the local area, both before and after the store is built.

Caroline Ford, trustee of CPRE in Hampshire, said: ‘There have been similar projects but this is the first one where we have been able to set up a project before a major supermarket is built. It helps the retailers so they can see where they can source more local food. It opens up possibilities for the local economy.’
