A HUNT to find a swimmer missing off the coast of Eastney has been called off for the evening.

The fire service, the police and the coastguard were sent to Fort Cumberland in Eastney to search the area, including using cameras in nearby storm drains, to find the man.

The swimmer, who is 29 and thought to be local, was seen to get undressed and leave his clothes on the beach at about 1.30pm today.

The alarm was raised by a fisherman when he did not return.

The coastguard, which was the first organisation to be sent out, called off its search at 6.50pm and handed the matter over to the police.
