MOST people want a few presents or a meal out to celebrate their birthday.
But Ray Marshman has decided to dangle 300ft in the air.
Ray, of Edgecombe Crescent, Rowner, Gosport, has signed himself up to abseil down the iconic Spinnaker Tower, at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.
The 64-year-old decided to take the plunge after he saw people scaling the tower last year and decided he wanted to have a go.
He said: ‘I saw people abseiling down the tower last year and I fancied having a go at it myself.
‘My wife said she would pay for me to do it as a present for my 65th birthday.’
Ray, a retired Ministry of Defence security worker, will also be fundraising for children’s hospice Naomi House.
‘I used to do cycles for the Make A Wish Foundation,’ added Ray.
‘So I thought I may as well do it for a local children’s charity and I thought of Naomi House.
‘This is something different and I can’t wait to do it – it will definitely get the old heart going.’
Ray will be celebrating his birthday on April 25.
His abseil takes place on May 7 and Ray hopes to raise £250.
His wife Julie, 61, said: ‘I will definitely not be joining him, I think he’s mad.
‘But I will be supporting him with my feet firmly on the ground.’
